LG Optimus L7 Review

Hello guys, we’ve just returned from San Fransisco for I/O Conference where there’s lot of amazing announcement happen. First, Google introduce the Nexus 7 tablet. Second, they come out with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Oh well, i miss those times we had at the I/O, but now it’s time to go back into the routine stuffs. Yep, you’re right, another review.

Today, we decide to provide you our hands-on experience with LG Optimus L7. This device considered as mid-range android handset. One main reason why LG release this kind of device is because they want to supply customers with affordable phone that coated with “classy” chassis. Well, if you ask to me, the Optimus L7 coating it’s not that beauty at all. In fact, if i plan to purchase some handset with state of the art chassis, i’d rather pick Droid RAZR or Ascend P1.

LG Optimus L7 style was introduced few days before MWC 2012 kick off in Barcelona. As we already mention before, the specially designed chassis is the main selling point here. It is created by the same guy who design Prada 3.0 handset. So, let’s take a look what this’s tiny little phone has in store for us. First, we must admit that the device feels really comfortable in our hands. No wonder why, because Optimus L7 chassis is currently measured at 8.7mm thick. Deep under it’s display, lies a physical home button that remind me of Galaxy S II. On the right and left hand side, you should be able to locate the menu and back capacitive button. If you interested in “muscle-phone” then you should remove Optimus L7 from your list. That’s because this device is “only” powered by 1.0Ghz single-core processors. In addition, LG also implement Adreno 200GPU, 5.0 megapixels rear shutter and HSPA network support. See? there’s nothing special on the specs. However, since i’m not a big fan of playing games or watching movies on phone, that is not really a big problem for me.

So, LG Optimus L7 might not the fastest smartphone that available around, but it’s specs and ability is more than enough to help you with your daily tasks. In terms of display, you should be able to experience crystal clear image from it’s 4.3″ NOVA screen with 800 x 480 pixels resolution. There are also some useful ports like microUSB, 3.5mm audio jack, standard SIM card slot, and microSD card slot. WiFi, Android Beam, NFC, FM radio, HotSpot, and bluetooth connectivity are all supported.

Just like i’ve told you before, LG Optimus L7 is not something for those of you who put high value on powerful hardware. With it’s 1.0GHz single-core CPU, this device is currently on the same class with Galaxy Ace Plus and HTC Desire V. Quadrant benchmark test reveal that Optimus L7 only manage to score 2,104 points. Manage to claim victory over Nexus S, but fall with small margin to Xperia U. Our favorite AnTuTu benchmark also provide us with similar reading. Optimus L7 win over Nexus S with 200 points difference, but taken by Xperia U with 5,348 points.

Now, let’s continue with the software. LG Optimus L7 running on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, which already become “older” version since the official release of Jelly Bean few days ago. But that’s okay guys. If you’re not too interested in using the Google Now or Project Butter engine, it’s better to use Ice Cream Sandwich. There are some standard apps like Mail, YouTube, Maps, and Search engine available. You can also experience the Optimus 3.0 UI, which according to my humble opinion, it’s not too different with the Android stock UI. But still, you can do many things with it. You can decorate the available five home screens. Put the beautiful weather widget from Yahoo or even turn your home screens into an amazing scrollable carousel drawer. Off course if you’re a love to do some deeper customization, like i do, you shouldn’t rely on default launcher app. Talk about apps, there are some pre-loaded app that able to add some productivity on your life, including Polaris Office, SmartWorld, SmartShare, Remote Cal Service, and LG Tag+.

LG Optimus L7 is currently packed with 1,700mAh battery unit. The standard test, which involve the consecutive movie playback in minimum brightness level and WiFi mode turned on, reveals that the handset is able to survive for six hours and 40 minutes. I know that it is not too spectacular. Especially if you compare it to Droid RAZR Maxx. But again, since i’m not a heavy user, i manage to get 36 hours of lifetime with Optimus L7. I only use it for regular chatting and browse around the web with occasionally download.

So, what’s my verdict? Well, if you’re looking for a mid-range Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich phone that support for NFC connectivity and moderate battery lifetime, then you should consider to buy LG Optimus L7. However, you’re also need to know that this phone is also packed with laggy UI that also posses bad transition effect. Not to mention that it is only able to provide slow data transmission speed and lack of ambient sensors. If you’re currently on low budget and miss all those features that i mention, then you should focus your attention to Samsung Galaxy S Advance, HTC One V, or Xperia U.
