This is a great news for those of you who claim yourself as a great fan of Android OS. A lesser known company from China is recently come out with mini PC that run on Google’s Android OS! This innovative device is currently called as MK802. On it’s small sized package, lies 1.5GHz Allwinner CPU, 512MB RAM, and 4GB of internal data storage. Not only that, you will also get USB port, HDMI output, and microSD card slot. This is mean that if you think that the 4GB internal memory is not good enough, you can expand the data space further. So, how does this device perform? Let’s find the answer, in our hands-on experience.
This small sized “Android Mini PC” feels plasticky and extremely light. We are surprised by the fact that such sophisticated component like CPU, RAM, and memory are able to be packed in a size of a flash drive. You should be able to put in on the your jeans pocket or bag. Not to mention that it is extremely cheap. You can grab it for $79 only! isn’t it crazy? Let’s say that you want to stream Netflix in your friend’s computer with your account. You can stream it into larger screen using this mini PC.
When we try to boot up this device for the first time, it takes quite some time. It even takes longer than our desktop computer to load. But soon after it’s done, we’re easily recognize the Android 4.0.2 interface that we know and love. As we explore around the device, we are also recognize that this device is support for VNC or remote control based apps. We hope that the manufacturer will implement some more connectivity features like Bluetooth and HID on the next release.
The mini PC manage to handle all media task like HD video, Spotify, YouTube, etc, really well. We are also able to run Google basic service like mail and maps without any problem. But we notice that the interface is little bit laggy. But there’s no need to worry guys. It is still running in an acceptable speed. The mini PC was reboot few times due to USB port, but as soon as we connect it to proper port with stable power supply, the performance was quite solid.
The benchmark test shows some interesting result. Quadrant measure the mini PC at 1238 points, while GLBenchmark decide that the device is worth 20fps judgement. Finally, the Sunspider benchmark, which handle every java environment in an android device, is pop-out with 5075,8 points.
Overall, MK802 Android mini PC is a great alternative for smart TV. We are instantly notice that some media apps like YouTube and Spotify are runs better on the device than any smart TV that we’ve ever see. Not to mention that not every smart TV is support for certain type of app. For instance, Netflix is only available for some Samsung TV model.
