Acer Iconia Tab A510 Duels Against the Asus Transformer Pad Infinity

Saturday, March 24th 2012. | Review

We must give some compliment for those people who already predict that Quad-Core CPU will become the main theme for mobile devices industry this year, including tablets. The interesting part is that the most anticipated tablet in the world, the New iPad is only packed with dual-core CPU! Well, Apple might claims that the GPU manage to provide users with quad-core like performance, but lot of experts believe that it won’t be the same. Others even claim that New iPad will be slower than iPad 2!

Acer Iconia Tab A510 vs Asus Transformer Pad Infinity

Anyway, back to topic. Lot of manufacturers decided to join the current trend by releasing new quad-core tablet, including Acer. The Taiwanese based company is recently announce the Iconia Tab A510. They said that this tablet is specially designed for gaming and video playing purpose with up to 15 hours battery lifetime! Wow, that must be incredible. This tablet might stand a chance to compete against the new Asus Transformer Pad Infinity, which is basically the upgraded version of the original Transformer Prime. HD screen is the main attraction of this tablet, aside from it’s Tegra 3 CPU off course. So, let’s see how’s these two tablets fight each other to claims the spot to become the number one quad-core tablet. Without any more delay, fully explained comparison coming up right after the break.

Display. Iconia Tab A510 is packed with 10.1 inch screen that able to provide you with 1280 x 800 pixels resolution display. It is build from a capacitive panel and currently measured at 149 ppi for it’s pixels density. On the other hand, Asus Transformer Infinity is easily overshadowed the A510 with it’s 10.1 inch screen, 1920 x 1200 pixels resolution, 224 ppi pixels density, and Super IPS+LCD display technology. Not to mention that it also has scratch-resistant glass, thanks to Corning Gorilla.

OS. The Acer tablet will run on Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich since it’s first day. That is currently make A510 the first tablet from the company that run on Ice Cream Sandwich from the beginning. Similar to it’s competitor, Transformer Pad Infinity also worked under Android 4.0 ICS.

Processors. As we mentioned earlier, A510 is powered by Tegra 3 processors that made by Nvidia. Off course we don’t have to explain that it posses four different cores. The first cores is dedicated to run daily tasks like browsing, email, text, or others. While the rest of it’s cores are dedicated for other tasks that require higher CPU usage and demanding graphics. Acer also noted that A510 has 12 cores that handle graphical features, so you are guaranteed to experience a kick-ass gaming performance. On the other hand, Asus packed Transformer Pad Infinity with Qualcomm MSM8960 Snapdragon chipset. That is currently include 1.5GHz dual-core Krait CPU and Adreno 225 GPU. Both of them are also a great tools to improve gaming performance.

Battery. Acer Iconia Tab is currently packed with standard Li-Ion 9800mah battery unit. According to the manufacturer, it should be able to provide you wuth 15 hours of talk time. Off course we still have to run a few test to prove this claim, but it indicates that Acer has a strong faith on this one. Unlike the display factors, Asus Transformer Pad Infinity is really beaten in here. This tablet is only carry on Li-Po 25Wh battery. Asus noted that it is only able to survive for 10 hours. But things will change a little if you attach it’s additional keyboard docks. It will bring you the additional 8 hours battery lifetime.

Camera. Iconia Tab A510 is packed with dual-cameras unit. The first one is 5.0 megapixels shutter that located on the back. It is able to capture image with 2592 x 1944 pixels resolution and 720p HD video. On the opposite side, you should be able to find the 1.0 megapixels secondary web camera. Asus Transformer Pad Infinity packed with bigger rear shutter. It is currently measured at 8.0 megapixels. You can capture a really great picture with it. The total resolution that can be captured by this tablet is 3264 x 2448 pixels! That should be more than enough to beat up some mediocre SLR camera. If you interested to initiate a video call, you can take advantage from it’s 2.0 megapixels camera, which is also bigger than A510.

Memory. The A510 tablet is posses 32GB internal data storage with 1GB RAM. In addition, it also has microSD card slot that can read up to 32GB memory card. On the other hand, Asus will release Transformer Pad Infinity in three different variant. You can choose between the 16GB, 32GB, or 64GB model. Each of them is packed with 1GB RAM and microSD card slot that can read up to 32GB memory card.

Now, it’s time to decide the winner. Acer Iconia Tab A510 is really a great tablet. It is packed with faster processors and longer battery lifetime. But the drawbacks is that it has smaller camera unit and display. On the other side, Transformer Pad Infinity manage to provide you with a resolution that nearly as close as the New iPad! It should be nice to watch HD movie from this tablet. Not to mention that it has it’s own keyboard dock and better camera unit. So, we decided that Asus is the real winner here. Productivity will become the main key for them to win the market this year. Camera will also plays important part as lot of customers use their tablet for entertainment purpose.

What about you? Do you have other opinion about this comparison? Then feel free to write it on the comment box below. We will be happy to read some feedback from our loyal readers.

We have additional comment from Rene Schmidt, it’s very great information for you all.

I have preordered the Aver A510 which should be out here in Denmark within the next 2 weeks. I have only tried it shortly but I had no doubt that I wanted that tablet as processor and GPU power is excellent and I think a full hd 1920×1080 is overkill on a 10.1″ screen but since the A510 has an HDMi output I will be able to plug it into my 50″ Full HD Samsung TV, which is my point exactly. We all know how difficult it can be to see the screen when using the device outdoors and the sun is shining just a bit. So you will not have much use for 10.1 full hd if you are planning on using the tablet outside due to glare, shadows etc.
So the A510 is to me clearly a better choice as you can use it for CPU heavy applications, watch Full HD movies throught the HDMi output and since I have orderede an A510 with 32GB built in memory, I will have 64GB with a fairly cheap 32GB MicroSD card. And if you want a keyboard or a docking station, then perhaps an ultrabook would be a better choice. A tablet is not ment to be a Full HD 10.1″ media center which needs a dock due to lousy battery times but a tablet is meant to be powerfull when used in our hectic lives, that be both work and family and then a tablet should be used for readinng emails at home at night, read up on the news and perhaps gather the family in front of the coma aquarium (TV) and use the tablet for playing a movie or cartoon on the TV with its HDMi conncetion.

If you need 1920x1080i then please dont think its worth anything on a 10.1″ screen. The reason for Full HD is that you can enjoy stunning nature shows, footbaal, movies and much more on a large screen tv.

So that is what Í think about the review. Acer A510 has 720p resolution and a HDMi output for use on a big tv screen. I do not hope people will but a tablet just for its Full HD resolution screen and its dock as you would probablty grow tired of recharching or docking it to not run out of power.

Acer A510 has a quad core cpu (brain) which will make it a Einstein tablet, while the Asus has a Dual Core cpu brain, which would probably be equal to a high school student.

And the quality of the pictures the tablets are able to take is not that important for one simple reason. You will look like a retard when using a 10.1″ tablet as a camera. That looks just about as stupid as wearing a fanny belt with a secret money belt under your t-shirt, in your bermuda shorts while wearing sandals and white tennis socks.

And yes it looks evenly stupid if you use an iPad for a camera.

So my personal choice is CPU power, batterylife, graphics performance, HDMi output over a 10.1″ Full HD screen.
And Corning Gorilla is also used to protect the screen on Samsung Galaxy S 2 mobiles and I can personally verify that you can easily scratch the screen anyway.

PS: I am an IT-Technician and have tried both tablet shortly, so im not just making this up :)

Thanks Rene! :)
